Special Iowa Supreme Court Constitution Day Program for Iowa High Schools

The Constitution of the United States was ratified on September 17, 1787. In 1911, the State of Iowa was the first state to celebrate Constitution Day. To celebrate the week of Constitution Day, the Iowa Judicial Branch will join the Iowa Department of Education and The Iowa State Bar Association to present a Constitution Day program for Iowa high school students on Wednesday, September 18, in the Supreme Court Courtroom in the Judicial Branch Building in Des Moines.

Iowa Supreme Court to Hear Oral Arguments at Des Moines North High School

On Constitution Day, Tuesday, September 17, the Iowa Supreme Court will hear oral arguments at the Des Moines North High School auditorium, 501 Holcomb Avenue. The oral arguments are open to the public and will begin at 7 p.m. A public reception with the supreme court justices will follow the oral arguments in the auditorium lobby.

Supreme Court Announces 2019-2020 Adjudicative Term, including Special Sessions

The Iowa Supreme Court today announced its 2019-2020 adjudicative term calendar, including a special evening session in Des Moines, special sessions at Drake and Iowa law schools, and three special sessions in communities around the state to hear oral arguments. The court's adjudicative term is from September 2, 2019, to June 30, 2020.

Chief Justice of Iowa Supreme Court named to lead two national court organizations

Iowa Chief Justice Mark S. Cady has been named president of the Conference of Chief Justices (CCJ) and chair of the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) Board of Directors. The one-year terms became effective at the end of July, during CCJ’s annual conference and NCSC’s Board of Directors meetings in Asheville, N.C.

Iowa Supreme Court 2018-2019 Adjudicative Term to End June 28

June 28, 2019, is the last day of the 2018-2019 Iowa Supreme Court adjudicative term. During the term, 113 cases were submitted to the court. All of the cases submitted to the court are complete, and the opinions are available on the Iowa Judicial Branch website at https://www.iowacourts.gov/iowa-courts/supreme-court/supreme-court-opinions/. Oral argument videos, case briefs, attorney names, and the Iowa Court of Appeals decision from further review cases can be found on the Iowa Judicial Branch website by searching for the case name or number using the site’s search function on the home page at https://www.iowacourts.gov.

Judicial Nominating Commission begins process for selecting nominees for Iowa Court of Appeals vacancy

The State Judicial Nominating Commission, which is responsible for selecting nominees for appointment to the Iowa Court of Appeals, announced today it will begin accepting applications for the vacancy that will occur when Judge Gayle Vogel retires July 1, 2019. The Commission received notice of the vacancy from Governor Reynolds on June 12, 2019.  The Commission has sixty days to send a slate of nominees to the Governor, who makes appointments to the court.
