Magistrate Jay Sommers was appointed to serve Scott County in 2021. He earned his undergraduate degree from St. Ambrose University in 1994 and a law degree in 1999 from Thomas M. Cooley Law School – Lansing, Michigan. He is a member of the Iowa Magistrate's Association, the Iowa State Bar Association, and the Scott County Bar Association, where he served on its Executive Council from 2013 – 2018. He maintains his private law practice in Bettendorf, Iowa. He is married and has three children.
